Custom home design and house plans in Clackamas County

Custom home design starts with your lot and how you live, not with a catalog. J Roderick Young Custom Homes helps Clackamas County clients turn an idea into buildable plans: we build from your plans or ours, from published plans, or from a design your architect or residential designer creates with us. We work hand in hand with you during design so costly mistakes are caught on paper, not on site.

Listed by Alan Mascord as a builder of four of their published plans.

Three ways to get to a plan

Bring your own plans. If you already have drawings, we review them against your lot and your budget, suggest changes where they'll save money or trouble, and price them in detail.

Start from a published plan. Plan publishers list J Roderick Young Custom Homes as a builder that has constructed their plans: the Ellington, the Bakersfield, the Lewiston and the Godfrey from Alan Mascord are on our record. A published plan is a fast, proven starting point, and it can be adjusted.

Design it new. We work with you and an architect or residential designer from the first sketch, so the house is designed with construction in mind. That's where a builder earns their place in design: knowing what a choice will cost before it's drawn.

The design decisions we help you get right

Placement on the lot

Where the house sits decides the driveway, the excavation, the views and how utilities reach it. We look at geology and utility connections before the plan is final.

Light and lighting

Window sizes and where lighting goes, decided with how you'll use each room in mind.

Storage

Pantries, closets and built-ins planned in, not squeezed in. Custom pantries and enamel-finished closets are a regular part of our homes.

Materials

Material quality advice on the critical choices, so the money goes where you'll see and feel it.

Budget

Option pricing in the estimate shows what each choice costs, so design and budget move together.

Finish

Trim, doors, cabinetry and paint chosen with a finisher's eye. That's where this company started.

Who does what during design

Building a house involves several people. Here's how the roles split, so you know who to ask.

Residential designer or architect

Works with you at the start to design the home the way you want it, either from scratch or from existing plans. For many homes a residential designer does the drawings; some clients prefer an architect.

J Roderick Young Custom Homes (builder)

Reviews the design for cost and buildability, places the home on the lot, prices it with option pricing, steers permits and then manages construction from dig-out to finish. You work directly with the owner, Jeremy Young.

Subcontractors

Framing, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, finish work and tile. We introduce you to them during construction; we have worked with many of them for years.

Inspectors

The city or county inspects the work at set stages so the home meets code before you move in.

Questions people ask before they call

Do I need an architect to build a custom home?

Not always. Many custom homes are drawn by a residential designer or built from a published plan. Some clients want an architect for a more unusual design. We work with either, and we'll tell you honestly which suits your house.

Can you change a published plan?

Yes. Published plans can usually be adjusted for your lot and needs, for example the garage side, room sizes or window placement. We look at the changes against your lot and price them before you commit.

Which published plans have you built?

Alan Mascord lists J Roderick Young Custom Homes as having built four of its published plans: the Ellington, the Bakersfield, the Lewiston and the Godfrey.

Does design help cost extra?

The first consultation costs nothing. Design fees for a designer or architect depend on who draws the plans and how much drawing is needed; we'll explain the options and costs at the consultation.

Ready to talk about your house?
